What is the definition of currency? If anyone lives in USA for her/him it means dollars ($) and in Japan the definition would be Yen (¥). In simple words we can say that it is a standardization of money which is different in different countries. Among all the countries currency some are powerful while other lacks, this also reflects about the status of economy of that very particular country.

Here we’ve a list of world’s 20 most powerful countries. United States Dollar ($)

If it comes to currency and its power how can we forget about United States Dollar. It has continuously ranked as the world’s most powerful currency and holds a global share of more than 51% alone. A group of countries named BRICS potentially tried to move away from Dollar and so they created their own BRICS currency as well but they failed to do so. Dollar is used in 25 different countries by different names. United States Dollar itself is named after Spanish dollar.

A $1 note (the lowest form of denomination in USA). More than 12 billion notes are in circulation as of now. The average lifespan of $1 note is around 6.5 years. It has a picture of George Washington on the front and in the back it consists of the great seal of United States
A $5 note in USA has a picture of Abraham Lincoln on the front. And on the back you see is Lincoln memorial. The design dates back to 2006 and its average lifespan stands at close to 5 years.
A $10 note here consists of Alexander Hamilton and on the back you see is US treasury building as he was the first secretary of US treasury. The design of this note dates back to 2004.
Andrew Jackson (the 7th president of USA) has its picture on $20 note. It was designed in 2003 and being printed since 1861. The average lifespan of this note is close to 8 years.
Each and every dollar you see here is made up of 25% linen and 75% cotton. However as their value increases their lifespan follows. This particular $50 note has a lifespan of around 12 years and was designed in 2004. It has the picture of Ulysses S. Grant who was the 18th president of USA. By volume it is the lowest circulated note in USA.
The biggest denomination in USA is the $100 note. Because it is the most valued one so its lifespan too is highest at 24 years. It has the picture of Benjamin Franklin who was one of the founders of USA. The note was designed in 2009.
Chinese Yuan – Renminbi

China has its currency named Renminbi. It is the world’s 5th largest traded currency. Often people call it Yuan well it is the basic unit of this very particular currency.

Yuan is the name of basic denomination of Chinese currency. All these currencies were released by China in 2019. .
Each and every currency here contains a portrait of Mao Zedong along with his name and lifespan. On the back you’ll see designated landscape of China.
Mao Zedong was the founder of the People Republic of China. He held his office till 1976.
On the top left corner of every note you’ll see a logo this logo represents the national emblem of the People’s republic of China.
The top left logo features Tiananmen gatetower along with stars.
The 100 denomination is the biggest form in Chinese currency. This currency too features the portrait of Mao Zedong.
India – Rupee (₹)

India has its currency named rupee, it is the 11th most traded currency in the world. The Indian government is known for having frequent changes in the rupee notes and coins. There were numerous changes in both coins and notes since independence. Let’s take a look at the current ones.

₹1 coin is the lowest value rupee in circulation. In the past 0.25 coins were also produced but as economy grew it was discontinued.
₹2 coin is the second lowest value in Indian currency. Earlier it has two fingers indicating the value but now it has been replaced.
₹5 coin is the most circulated coin in the Indian currency. On the occasion of 75th year of Independence the Indian government released ₹1,₹2,₹5 and ₹10 coins in 2021.
₹10 is the 2nd highest valuable coin in Indian currency.
₹20 coin and ₹20 note both are in circulation as of 2026. In each coin you can see the making year.
₹10 note contains the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi on the front and Konark Sun Temple (A world heritage site) picture is in the back . It was designed in 2017
As stated above both ₹20 coin and note are in circulation. Here you see a ₹20 note which also contains Mahatma Gandhi portrait followed by picture of Ellora Caves in the back. It was designed in 2019.
Here you see a ₹50 note which contains a picture of Hampi with Chariot (A world heritage site). It is slightly distinctive because of its blue colour and was designed in 2017.
The 2nd highest form of denomination in rupee is ₹100 note. It contains the picture of The Queen’s stepwell, a world heritage site situated in Rajasthan, India .
₹500 is the highest form of denomination available in India. It was designed in 2016. Following the demonetisation on 8 Nov 2016, India launched all new currencies.
Japan – Yen (¥)

Japan has its currency named Yen. The interesting part here is we see only three types of notes in circulation. First one is of ¥1000, second is of ¥5000 and third is of ¥10000. Let’s take a look at each one of them.

¥1000 note – This design was issued by Japan in 2024, it is known as sixth F series notes and it is the lowest available denomination note available in the country.
The second highest note in value is ¥5000. It has a portrait of Tsuda Umeko who founded the Tsuda University. On the back you see wisteria flowers.
The highest available denomination note in Japan is of ¥10,000. It contains the portrait of Shibusawa Eiichi who is considered as the father of Japanese capitalism.
1 yen coin
When Japan released the coin it raised eyebrows primarily because of its odd design. The coin has a hole right in between just like the 50 yen coin you’ll see later.
10 yen coin
50 yen coin – the design was always in question just like the 5 yen coin.
100 yen coin
500 yen coin – the highest value coin in Japanese currency.
Russia – Ruble

The last name in the list is the Russian Ruble. What’s interesting here is to note that the Ruble is the world’s second oldest currency in continuous circulation, the first one is Pound Sterling. On global scale of countries currency Ruble has a fractional share of less than one percent due to western sanctions. There are few coins in circulation too in Russia known as Kopecks but due to inflation they are no longer or very rare in use.

The smallest Ruble note is of 5 Ruble. It is in circulation since 1998. Due to inflation it was discontinued but reintroduced in 2023. On front it has a monument of “Millenium of Russia” and on the back you’ll see Novgorod fortress wall
The 10 ruble bank note too is in circulation since 1998. It has a picture of Yenisey river bridge on front.
The third number is of 50 Ruble note which contains a picture of sculpture from the basement of Rostral column in St.Petersburg.
The 100 Ruble note is the newest note in the list. Russia introduced it in 2023 with new orange colour touch.
Introduced in 2017, the primary colour of 200 Ruble note is Green. On top left (front) you’ll see the emblem of Coat of Arms of Russian federation. On front a picture of monument of ships is displayed which sank in Sevastopol. The back of note features the state museum preserve of Tauric Chersonese.
The light violet is the primary colour of 500 Ruble note. On front you’ll see the monument of Peter the Great and on back there is a picture of Slovetsky Monastery.
Primary colours on 1000 ruble note is blue and green. On front you see the monument of Prince Yaroslav and on the back there’s chapel.
The second highest in value is 2000 Ruble note which is in light blue colour. The bridge of front side of the note is the Rusky bridge and on the back there’s Vostochny Cosmodrome.
The highest in value is 5000 Ruble note which draws its inspiration from red and brown colour. It consists of the picture of NN Muravjov Amursky and on back there’s a picture of bridge on Amur river on display.
