ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), headquartered in Jakarta, Indonesia is an international organisation of which 11 countries are part. It includes developed economies like Indonesia, Singapore to least developed economies like Timor-Leste, Laos as well. ASEAN countries represents a population of close to 700 million people and 6.3% of global GDP (PPP). In this article we’ve ranked all 11 ASEAN countries on basis of GDP, area and population.
On 8 August, 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand ASEAN was formed by 5 countries named – Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia. Brunei joined ASEAN in 1984 which was followed by Vietnam in 1995. In 1997 both Laos and Myanmar joined ASEAN, two years later Cambodia too became a part of this organisation in 1999. Timor-Leste is the latest country to join ASEAN in October 2025 making up what is ASEAN today that consist of 11 members.

Singapore
With 2nd highest GDP among all ASEAN countries Singapore is the smallest country in the list. With an area of 707.11 sq km it sits at 11th spot. According to latest 2025 estimates the country has a population of 6,110,200 (9th among all ASEAN countries). It’s a tax haven and acts as a major global financial hub. Singapore is the only country in Asia with AAA sovereign credit rating. The GDP per capita is highest in Singapore globally.

The country’s passport has continuously ranked as the most powerful one. It is known for its skyline and being the top 3 least corrupt nations in the world. Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation is headquartered in Singapore because it acts as a major trading hub as well. The Port of Singapore is one of the busiest and strategically important shipping hubs for 120 countries globally.
Indonesia
GDP, Area and population – Indonesia sits at top in all three aspects. The country has an area of 1,904,569 sq km, GDP of $1.540 trillion and population of 270 million. In trillion dollar club it’s the only country in the list. Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia is a Fintech and financial hub that contributes the most to the Indonesian economy.

The economy of Indonesia is 17th largest in the world by nominal GDP and it is classified as an emerging economy. Agriculture is one of the largest sectors which employs 49 million or 41% of nations total workforce. Half of world’s palm oil is produced here and this makes Indonesia the largest producer of palm oil. The annual production is 40 million metric tons. Production of palm oil alone generates 4.5% of country’s GDP.
Myanmar
Also referred to as Burma, Myanmar is 2nd largest ASEAN country by area with an area of 676,579 sq km. By GDP it sits at 7th spot with $60.560 billion. The country has a population of about 55 million which makes it the 5th most populated ASEAN country.

Myanmar economy is largely contributed by informal sector which includes drugs, smuggling and other illegal activities. The country suffered political unrest and civil wars since inception which led to under devlopment and significant rise in poverty. After Afghanistan Myanmar is the world’s 2nd largest opium producer, around 25% of opium are produced in the country and it is smuggled through Thai border where most of the country’s illegal activities like drugs smuggling take place.
Thailand
In terms of area and GDP Thailand is the 3rd largest ASEAN country with an area of 513,120 sq km and a GDP of $579.996 billion respectively. With a population of 65 million it sits at 4th spot among all ASEAN countries.

Thailand’s economy is classified as a developing economy. In Asia the country’s economy is 9th largest with exports as its primary GDP contributor. Exports account for more than 50% of Thailand’s GDP. Industries and services sector contribute the most to the country’s GDP while agriculture also plays a key role. Thailand is one of the world’s top rice producing countries. In sea foods the country exports shrimps and is world’s third largest sea food exporter.
Vietnam
Area wise and GDP wise Vietnam is the 4th largest ASEAN country. In terms of population it sits at third spot with 96 million population as per 2019 census. Vietnam’s capital is Hanoi and largest city is Ho Chi Minh (also known as the Vietnam’s financial capital.

The economy of Vietnam is classified as developing/emerging economy. Globally it is the 23rd largest economy. Samsung is the largest foreign investor in Vietnam. The company is said to have invested over $23 billion in Vietnam to setup its multiple manufacturing units. The South Korean giant generates 1/3rd of its profits from Vietnam. Agriculture also contributes significantly to the country’s GDP – Vietnam is the world’s third largest rice producer, second largest coffee producer and largest cashew producer.
Malaysia
With a population of over 34 million Malaysia is the 6th most populated ASEAN country. Area wise it sits at 5th spot with 330,803 sq km. The country has a nominal GDP of $516.428 billion which makes it the 5th largest in ASEAN countries by economy and 34th largest globally.

The economy of Malaysia is one of the most trade intensive economies globally. The country has recorded trade surplus since 1998. After Indonesia it is the world’s 2nd largest palm oil producer. Kuala-Lumpur the country’s capital is also hub to the semiconductors industry. Malaysia is home to an iconic landmark known as “The Petronas Towers”. Till 2004 this tower was the world’s tallest.
Philippines
At 112 million people, Philippines is the world’s 12th most populated country and 2nd most populated among all ASEAN countries. It has an area of 300,000 sq km while the country’s GDP stands at $512.22 billion which makes it the 35th largest economy by nominal GDP globally and 14th largest in Asian continent.

Known for exporting largest no of coconut products Philippines is also the world’s third largest coconut and pineapple producer. In sugar too the country is one of the world’s top producers. Philippines is also hub to electrical equipment manufacturing. Companies like Nokia, Toshiba, Texas instruments manufacture chips, hard disk and semiconductors here.

Laos
Among all ASEAN countries Laos is the only country which is landlocked. It has an area of 236,800 sq km which makes it the 7th largest ASEAN country by area. The country has a nominal GDP of $16.320 billion which makes it the 3rd smallest ASEAN economy. With a population of just over 6.7 million it is the 4th smallest ASEAN country. Vientiane is the capital of Laos.
Cambodia
Area wise Cambodia is the 4th smallest ASEAN country with an area of 181,035 sq km. GDP wise too Cambodia is the 4th smallest ASEAN nation. It has a population of 17,638,801 which makes it the 7th most populated ASEAN country.

Cambodia is home to Angkor Wat – the world’s largest religious temple dedicated to Hindu and Buddhist religion. Textile, tourism and agriculture are three most important sectors of Cambodia that contribute the most to its GDP. Garment industry holds the largest share in the country’s manufacturing sector. 80% of country’s exports come from garment industry. More than 15% of country’s GDP comes from tourism.

Timor-Leste
With area of 14,874 sq km Timor-Leste is the 3rd smallest ASEAN country. Its GDP stands at $2.120 billion which makes Timor the smallest ASEAN country by GDP. The country’s population stands at 1.3 million which is second least among all ASEAN countries.

Brunei
The second smallest ASEAN country is Brunei with area of just 5765 sq km and a GDP of just over $16 billion. The country’s population is 4,40,715 which makes it the least populated ASEAN country.
