Top 5 Major Cities in California: The largest state in USA by population and third largest by area is California. Nicknamed The Golden State California is home to 40 million residents. The state constitutes the largest economy among all states in USA with GSP (Gross State Product) of more than $4.3 trillion making it the world’s largest sub-national economy. As an Independent country California would be the world’s fourth largest country by nominal GDP.

The economy of California is led by agriculture with an annual revenue of close to $60 billion. The state has 25.3 million acres of farmland on which farming of 400 different types of crops are done. California is primarily known for almonds production. It is interesting to note that 80% of world’s commercial almonds are produced in California. It is also the undisputed leader in dairy sector as it supplies 20% of total milk production in USA via 1,100 specialized farms located throughout the state, majority of them are concentrated in Central Valley.

90% of all grapes produced in USA are grown in California. The state produces 80 different varieties of grapes which includes Wine grapes, Table grapes, Raisin grapes etc. The grapes industry alone in California is valued at $3 billion. The city is also known as The Entertainment Capital of the world as it is the oldest hub in USA for television production. Many also call Los Angeles The Heart of American Film Industry. Infamous Hollywood Sign on Mount Lee is located here. It is a 45-foot tall structure erected in 1923 as a temporary advertisement.

Founded way back in November, 1777 San Jose is officially recognised as the oldest civilian settlement in California. Founded by two Spanish explorers the city was established as a farming community to supply food to military outposts but now it leads the nation in tech.

Several big tech companies like PayPal, Cisco, Adobe, Zoom and eBay are headquartered in San Jose. The tech development in San Jose is such that the city is often referred to as The Capital of Silicon Valley. The city is known for expensive housing which ranked 5th most expensive in the world. The last city in the list is Fresno which is also the fifth most populous city in California. It has one of the highest poverty rates in USA driven by a unemployment rate of 8%. The city is known for two major buildings – Pacific SouthWest Building and Bank of Italy Building.

Pacific SouthWest Building is the tallest building in Fresno which stands at 315-feet above the ground. It is a residential building having 16 stories and its construction was completed way back in 1925 making it older than 100 years. Many also refer to it as a Security Bank Building.

Bank of Italy Building is a 125-feet tall building constructed originally for the Bank of Italy which became Bank of America that left the building in 1973. In 1918 this building was completed and it still stands tall. The building is lying vacant since 1973. In 2025 Fresno authorities stalled the building’s renovation due to high cost.
